SGA Monthly Report SGA checks in to tell us what they’ve been up to in the past month By Niv Elis, First Year Representative
Since the last riveting issue of the observer, the SGA has been keeping itself pretty busy. On Friday, November 16th, the annual International Dinner, organized by SGA Social Chair Leela Ramnath and event organizer Justin Grosnick, was a roaring success. The dinner brought in over $4,000 in revenue, which will go to the Student Foundation’s Summer Internship Fund.
Students really kicked it up a notch to make food from all around the world, such as lasagna, sesame balls, and Korean pancakes, with support from both SGA and SAIS’s regional departments. While glutting themselves on food, attendees also enjoyed Balinese dancers (on loan from the embassy), salsa dancers from SAIS’s Latin Dance Club (those 6 students suddenly look somewhat hotter), a fabulous fashion show (they’re going to have to rename it “STRUT-egic Studies”), and enjoyably inappropriate comedy by emcees David Michaels and Alton Buland (shockingly tame considering the Halloween pedophile costume one presenter wore).
Also this month, the Community Service Committee sponsored a group of SAIS-ers to participate in Habitat for Humanity. The came, they saw, they laid sod. Good times were had by all – it was so nice we may just have to do it again!
Finally, the Academic Committee was hard at work, as always, on some major changes for the bidding system. This month the Committee was also dealing with possibilities for reforming the orals requirement, due to certain challenges posed by the examinations in past years. Keep your eyes peeled for the Student Survey on these important issues. Both will be discussed at the upcoming Dean’s Forum on December 5th, to which all are encouraged to come (this will make a difference for you, people!).
